Oak is available in two types: Oak (Red Oak) and White Oak (Oak).
White Oak has an average weight of 769 kg / m3, a hardness of 6049N, light sapwood, light brown to dark brown wood. White Oakwood is resistant to insect attack due to its high tannin content. Most White Oak species have straight, medium to coarse wood with longer rays than the Red Oak.
Red Oak has an average weight of 753 kg / m3, hardness 6583N, white to light brown wood, reddish brown heartwood. In terms of physical characteristics, hard and heavy red oak, strong torsional strength and medium strength, high compressive strength, easy to bend by steam.
Thus, in terms of hardness, white oak and red oak are roughly equal. However, White Oak has better waterproofing properties and has a more varied and beautiful wood texture, so Oak White is preferred over Red Oak. Note that the use of Oak to use must be treated to less than 20% humidity, because at this level, wood fungus can not grow.
Application of oak
White Oak has a distinctive "bottle" form of wood cells that are tightly bonded to each other so that water does not penetrate. With this outstanding feature, White Oak is resistant to decay and rotting very well, so White Oak is often used for boat building, wine barrels and outdoor furniture.
